VOLUNTEERS AT SALEM
RESOURCE
FAMILIES
Resource
Families make a one-on-one difference by temporarily "adopting" a child for
once-a-month outings. Children at Salem know all about "resources".
Every child longs for a resource family. Unlike many mission opportunities,
being a resource family does not require one to give up home and personal
belongings, say goodbye to loved ones, risk life or health, raise support,
make a two-year fulltime commitment, or be subjected to painful
immunizations. Being a Resource Family is a rewarding mission which
requires only a little bit of time and a share of love.
If you think you might be
interested in becoming a resource family, or if you'd like more information,
email us or
call Theresa at 301.689.6625.212. Or view the
brochure.
WORKDAYS
Volunteer
opportunities at Salem include workdays--typically in the
summer--to tackle tasks such as clearing hiking/riding trails, freshening
paint, cleaning up the grounds, and working in the garden. Volunteers have
come from as far away as Baltimore and Washington, DC, to work, play
and eat with the children of Salem.
Watch here for details--or
let us know
us if you would like to be informed of the next Workday via email or phone.
WCBC CHRISTMAS PARTY
Each year WCBC
Radio, Cumberland, plans and hosts a magnificent party for the children of
Salem. Volunteer "Host Families" are seated with "their" child for the
evening to exchange gifts and enjoy food, a visit from Santa and a brief
program featuring the Salem Choir.
Volunteer individuals and businesses also give gifts from a wish list
provided by each child.
The WCBC Party is legendary among Salem children, who look forward to it
eagerly each year and tell newcomers about it immediately when they arrive.
Mary Clites has organized the party for each of its 15
years. If you would like to be involved in any aspect of the WCBC
party, held this year on Tuesday evening, December 19th, contact Mary at
301.724.5000.
GARDENING
Gardening at Salem is both therapeutic and an introduction to a
healthy lifestyle. Flower boxes at the windows, and a garden filled
with more flowers and with vegetables, teach kids an appreciation for the
earth and let them experience the thrill of seeing--and eating--the literal
fruits of their labor.
We are seeking a volunteer gardener to work with our children this summer
(2007), helping them to plan and plant seeds of beauty and nourishment all
around them. Gardening at Salem is organic. If you have interest
in this opportunity, email or phone
Alice (301-689-8176 x 206).
